Extension or My children will never leave home

Description

What is the alternative dwelling for a family which has grown into 3 families?

As the parents become older they wish to leave room for the families of their children who have become older too but still live under the same roof. This is a very typical scenario for Greek families, which over the years has a created its own typology. The family in this case wishes to preserve the outdated 2 storey 80’s family home and add a new extension to create 3 separate residences all autonomous but in one building.

Designing an extension to an existing family home presented us with the opportunity to explore the stereotype condition of the greek family, where children never leave home. The parents wish to leave room for their children so they withdraw into an attachment/extension building in three storeys which overlooks the existing family home which is now taken over by the families of their two children. The new extension is viewing and is in full access of the back garden.
