Design for a bookcase installation and custom made furniture piece as part of the renovation
of the ground floor interior office/exhibition space.
The ground floor space of “The Breeder” premises at Evmorfopoulou str., was a double storey height idiosyncratic interior separated from the street by a translucent glass front.
In it’s interior the activity is two-fold.
The exhibition space, and the office of the art magazine. Main characteristics are a metal staircase leading to the gallery space in the basement, and a niche. The continuous white wall surface that envelopes its interior, forms a deep asymmetrical niche in full height from floor to ceiling, opposite the glass front. The installation alike the activity in this interior is two-fold, also. It consists of 8 white shelves, a curtain and a 5 metre long yellow ladder. The niche becomes the bookcase, which is revealed according to choice or need, when the curtain is drawn.
The long curtain is a soft boundary between the two activities, and at the same time as a “theatrical” backdrop to the static yellow ladder, in full view from the glass front entrance. The ladder is a functional element, which serves access to the shelves, when the curtain is drawn, and appears in paradox as an element on its own, concealing its apparent utility, when the curtain is shut.
